The new studio will have the same look and feel, but will be even bigger!

Thank You

Thank you.

It’s very easy to forgot to say those two words. I can honestly say I do always think them in my mind, make a mental note to write a card, send an email, or call a friend…but life slips away much too quickly and I’ve realized that in the moment, is the right time. So,  I’m trying much harder to just say it, right then and there, and not wait.

Better late than never.

Last weekend was a  pretty incredible Pilates-packed adventure. I kicked it off by teaching a free class at The Liberty Hotel in Boston. Powered by Equinox, I was geared up, but not sure how many people would actually come. Much to my surprise, over 20 of you came out in the cold for the class, and despite the early hour and lack of music, it was a true success!

Sunday I taught a workshop at North End Yoga. As many of you know, NEY is under construction and our upstairs studio is turning into wonderland of amazingness. [Along the way there have been some delays, but it's been incredible to see how many of you keep turning up for classes, even though our temporary studio is small and fills up quickly.]

As part of the remodel my workshop date was changed at the last minute and once again I was nervous not many people would even come.  Shock number 2. [Why do I doubt you guys?] Not only did 26 people attend the workshop, but we sold the room out!! The energy was contagious and we worked out hard with the studio’s new 3lb. weighted balls and of course our magic rings!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for continuing to support me by attending my special events and classes every week. It sounds cliche, but it means more to me than you know. Every packed room, gives me the confidence to keep going, keep growing and keep doing what I love to do.

This Weekend in Boston

This weekend in Boston I’m thrilled to be teaching two Pilates events! Details are on the special events page of my website.

As a reminder:

  • Class at the Liberty Hotel is FREE. I’m teaching it on behalf of Equinox and will be giving out free guest passes if you attend. Bring your own mat and a friend too!
  • The ball workshop at North End Yoga is filling up quickly, but I do have space still available. Make sure to sign up online before the class on Sunday at Noon, to reserve your space.

As always, contact me if you have any questions and I hope to see you all around town.

I’m Back

After all the wrapping, decorating, baking (only one related injury) traveling and eating, Christmas is over. Now it’s time to prepare for the New Year and the exercise related rush that is sure to follow!

It’s been a nice break, but I’m looking forward to coming back (refreshed and energized… you better watch out) to teach my favorite classes and work with some fantastic private clients at Equinox. January can be a very motivating month because the gyms are packed and everyone is revved up to be the best they can be!

I’ve missed you all and I’m so glad to be back (well, almost back. I’m flying Virgin America back from San Francisco and we have free Wi-Fi, thanks to Google!)

Here is my class schedule for this week:

Monday (12/2 8): Kimmel Yeager is subbing my 7 pm class @ Equinox

Tuesday (12/29): I’m teaching at 7:15 pm @ North End Yoga

Wednesday (12/30):I’ m teaching at 5:45 pm @ Equinox

Thursday (12/31): No Pilates at North End Yoga because of New Years Eve.

Holiday Pilates Workshop

I’m so excited to be teaching a very special holiday Pilates workshop tomorrow at North End Yoga. I always get a mild case of anxiety this time of year because there is just way too much to do and never enough time. Working out makes me feel twelve times better and ready to conquer the world, so I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to help others who are feeling the same way.

I know a lot of us travel around the holidays and that makes it difficult to work up a sweat. Maybe it’s too cold to exercise outdoors and you probably don’t have a gym that you can go to when you are out of town. Plus even if you do stay in Boston, many gyms and studios have reduced holiday hours. So that’s why this workshop is going to be so helpful.

What to expect:

60 Minutes of Beginner – Intermediate Pilates Class. We’ll kick off the workshop with an hour class that will combine classical mat Pilates exercises and some light cardio based drills- which we will mix with Pilates to increase your heart rate and help you burn extra calories. Class will end with an extra long cool-down session that will help you relax and unwind.

Demonstration and Practice of Take Home Exercises. I want to equip you with a few different and short series of easy to remember exercises that you can do anywhere at anytime, simply by putting on your Ipod and finding a quiet space. I’ll show you what the series is, and then we’ll all try it together.

Raffle. Everyone who comes to class is entered into a free raffle to win the following:

Joseph Pilates’ Book, Return to Life Through Contrology

Pilates Ring with Handles

North End Yoga Gift Certificate

Holiday Music! Come on, did you really think I wasn’t going to have a very special Christmas playlist? I promise it will put you in the holiday spirit. Hey, you can even sing along if you want to!

Space to this workshop will be limited and capped at 21 people. There are still slots available, but I encourage you to sign up ahead of time online to reserve your space. Contact me if you have any problems or questions! I hope to see you on Saturday!

5 Tips to Stay in Shape with Pilates

December is one of the most challenging months to maintain your regular workout regime. Our to-do lists are much longer and with shopping, parties, baking and travel it’s easy to put aside your Pilates practice for more ‘practical’ short term responsibilities.

But what if you can do both? Not only would your body feel good, but if you choose to keep up with your exercise and diet you will be more likely to increase your productivity and have some extra energy to keep up with this fast-paced season!

All it takes is a little extra dedication and focus on YOU. Here’s a short list to help you out. Are you up to the challenge?

1. Make your workouts count

It’s a fact that in order to achieve weight loss you have to burn more calories than you take in. And yes, Pilates classes can help you do that! In fact, if you are not breaking a sweat in class, then chances are you are not performing the exercises correctly.

I’d suggest combining some basic cardio [walking, jogging, elliptical, stair master, etc] to your Pilates practice. Try doing 20-30 min of cardio before your next Pilates class and you’ll see that you are already warmed up before class starts and can dive right into your core training, in a quicker and more efficient way. If you can’t fit in cardio before class, why not do some after? Your abs will be more engaged, (keep thinking ‘in and up’ even while you’re running) and your legs and arms will be ready and set to go full force along with you!

2. Try a session on the Reformer

Joe Pilates

Pilates on the mat is an excellent form of exercise, but eventually everyone should experience what it feels like to add resistance equipment to your sessions. Working on the reformer will build muscle and strength.

I’ve been teaching mat classes for over 6 years and I always though I knew what my core was, but it wasn’t until I had my first session on the reformer that I knew the real definition of abdominal soreness. It is the surest way to a six-pack that I know of.

3. Pilates On Demand

So your home at Mom and Dad’s house for the holidays and there’s no way to get to the gym…nice try but that’s no excuse! Pack a Pilates dvd in your carry-on luggage!

Here is a link with a ton to choose from. Pick one that looks fun and as long as you keep your basic form that you have learned in class, you’ll be just fine!

excercise tvI’ve also recently discovered that On Demand offers some great FREE classes on Exercise TV. I’m a huge fan of Jillian Michaels and would suggest any of her workouts any day!

4. Stay committed to your classes

Jenn TeachingI know it is difficult to make it your regularly scheduled mat classes in the month of December (trust me, it’s just as hard for me as it is for you) BUT if you can mark your calendar and make the extra effort to come to class, I promise you won’t regret it.

My plan for classes this month is to keep them all high energy with great new music and lots of support! I also plan to leave a little extra time at the end of class so we can focus more on stretching and relaxing before we all head out into the chilly outdoors.

By committing to one or two classes a week you are giving your body the love and respect it deserves. You’ll sleep better, make smarter food choices and probably even feel proud of yourself for putting your body first!

5. Eat in moderation

Just remember, it’s ok to treat yourself as long as it’s in moderation! I bet you won’t feel too guilty for indulging if you work on numbers 1-4 on the list above.
