The Truth About #ChefBoomer

For many years (well, since the dawn of my social media accounts) I've been keeping a secret from you all. I won't call it a lie. You'll see why. But I do have a confession to make. It's about my husband, otherwise known as #ChefBoomer. Well guys, he's not actually a chef.

He's a Scientist. Yes. A Scientist ...

Ryan works for an incredible company named Unum Therapeutics. Unum is a Cambridge, MA company developing cellular immunotherapies based on an antibody-coupled T-cell receptor, or ACTR. Did you get that? Yea, I know. It makes me think of the first time Ryan met my parents. My mom asked him what he went to college for. He told her his degree was in "Molecular, Cellular Developmental Biology." Then she asked about his job and as soon as he started explaining her eyes glazed over. She had no idea what he was talking about. I always tell Ryan to break it down a little, so us non genius folk (no offense) can comprehend. Unum works on cancer cell therapy that couples tumor specific antibodies to the body's own immune system. Everyone should try to understand because Ryan and his co-workers are quite literally working to save lives. Plus, I think we all know someone who has been affected by cancer. It's scary, it's life-changing and it's very real. I have so much admiration for what Ryan and his colleagues are doing.

Plus I've had the pleasure of meeting many people at Unum and I can honestly say they are some of the nicest, hardest working men and women. Their company is very close knit with a strong  and unique sense of community- certainly not something you see everywhere.

Back to the chef thing. Ryan is an amazing cook. So incredible that anyone who tastes his food knows he should be a chef. (Maybe someday?) Years ago I started posting the meals he made me under the hashtag #ChefBoomer on Instagram. Looking back we've built up quite a collection and until recently he actually had no idea I was doing this. Along the way people started asking me what restaurant he worked at and how they could experience his food. Every time I'd meet a new person, they'd comment on how awesome it must be to have a husband who is a chef. Well yes, they are correct. My husband IS awesome. His food is restaurant-worthy. He just so happens to have a different career.

Many, many years ago at one of Chef Boomer's famous North End Dinner parties.

So, I hope you know I never intentionally meant to 'lie' to you all. In my eyes, Ryan is and always will be #ChefBoomer. Food is to Ryan, what Pilates is to me. He also so happens to be a pretty spectacular husband and father. And the cherry on top is that he is my biggest supporter. Ryan is always there for me when I need to take on a new class, rush off to a client, teach or put on an event, etc. Without ever questioning it, he supports everything I do, no matter how big or small. And now it's time for me to do the same (finally) for him!

Unum has a team riding in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) and I'm thrilled to be teaching a Pilates Fusion Fundraiser to help them raise money for their group. Founded in 1980, the Pan-Mass Challenge is an annual bike-a-thon that today raises more money for charity than any other single athletic event in the country. The PMC donates 100% of every rider-raised dollar to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

This special JPPilates fundraiser class will be held THIS SUNDAY, July 23rd from 12-1pm at North End Yoga. The minimum suggested donation is $30.
